Affirmation Reflection: Stay Open and Curious
I’m a big fan of affirming oneself; I believe that when we stand in our own truth, we unmask our inner greatness, our inner strength and our hidden gifts and potential. Recently, while reviewing the Be Strong Families Living the Protective Factors Affirmation Deck, I came across an affirmation card that spoke to me; it said, “Stay Open and Curious — When fear threatens, I concentrate on seeing more options and waiting for more possibilities to emerge.” It really made me reflect on the past few years, what I’ve learned and how I’ve changed.
From 1619-2019: Lest We Forget
To the slave master, the auction block was a public space for selling slaves. For the slave and their family, it was a source of fear, shame, and humiliation. There are some public places in America where slave auction blocks remain intact- a daunting reminder of an ugly past. Today, Aug. 20, we honor the memories of our African ancestors that endured the horrors of slavery, a shameful American atrocity that lasted 400 years.
What to Do When You Have Negative Feelings Toward Your Emerging Adult
Feelings like frustration, resentment, and disappointment—and yes, even hatred—toward your emerging adult is to be expected and a natural occurrence during parenthood. Unfortunately, this is an issue that is under-addressed in parenting advice or discussions and precisely why parents are reluctant to express such negative feelings out loud.
So, what can you do about these feelings?
There’s A New Way to Parent Café!
Be Strong Families has been hosting Parent Cafés and teaching others how to host them since we began in 2012. Our original Parent Café deck of questions was bilingual, in Spanish and English. As we've evolved, we've worked with communities to translate Be Strong Families Parent Cafés into other languages and to develop Parent Café decks specific to cultural needs.
Weighing in on “Parent Engagement Through a Lens of Equity”
As a privileged white woman in a position of power and authority, committed to diversity, inclusion and radical co-creation, I’ve been trying to sit this one out. I’ve been trying to let my actions speak louder than my words and to use whatever energy and influence I have as an ally to make way for voices at the margin to come to the center and to speak for themselves in this conversation that is bubbling to the surface in our field. I’m aware that sometimes the most important thing I can do to promote equity is to shut up and encourage, and sometimes even coach others to say what’s in their heart and on their mind.
But I have something to say: this sh*t is annoying.
Nurturing the Spirit of Family
The warm weather of late June acts like a beacon to my family; it draws us Up North for our annual 4th of July camping trip. As a family, we have been migrating to the serene northwest part of Michigan for the last ten years. Fishing, hiking, dune climbing, and playing in the sand and surf fill our days while campfires, s'mores, stargazing and family stories complete the nights.
Improving Engagement by Prioritizing “Human” and “Service” Over Paperwork
Eligibility. Intake. Paperwork. “It’s our policy.” Recently, I have been involved in, and heard through others of, numerous situations that highlight the ways in which our human services systems prioritize the needs of the system and its workers—us—over the needs of the people we serve. Our policies and procedures can create barriers to access and inadvertently add to the suffering of people in need.
A Season of Change: Summer
There is the opportunity to nurture ourselves and to help our children and loved ones to nurture themselves too. To create a place, as parents or caregivers, that has a sense of sanctuary. To grow habits that produce a healthy life and stockpile practices that last a lifetime. This all starts with a move or a shift in your vitality, your life. When we cultivate and encourage this vitality, we allow for new growth in ourselves. A way to do this, is through Journey to Vitality.
Coming Together to Navigate the Larger World of Parenting
At precisely 2:30 p.m. on Sunday May 19, I took my seat along side my family at The Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Missouri and eagerly waited for the graduation ceremony to begin. As the college graduates began to fill the arena, one by one, I caught a glimpse of my son in his cap and gown and my heart swelled with pride and joy. But when the moment came for him to march across the stage and receive his diploma, pride and joy took a back seat, almost instantly I exhaled a sigh of relief.
