Let’s face it: money stress is something many of us deal with every day. Whether it’s feeling overwhelmed by bills, uncertainty about your financial future, or simply wondering why you can’t seem to get ahead, it all takes a toll on your well-being.
Normally, you probably would get the advice to ‘be better with your money’ or ‘save more’ or ‘spend less. But we both know that that doesn’t take away the stress. If anything, you might now feel guilty on top of it. Or feel shame or pressure, exacerbating the stress. In the financial world, money is related to numbers, percentages and math. But I’ve seen in my 20 years of being a financial advisor, that often, the real cause of the stress is not solved by any amount of money. I’ve seen this with people of all income levels, including millionaires.
Money - and how we relate to it- goes much deeper than that. It traces back to our childhood: how our parents handled money, what we learned from them, and the beliefs we formed in those early years. Over time, these beliefs created certain patterns and behaviors, many of which we’re not even aware of anymore.
Unfortunately, these patterns and behaviors often don’t serve us. They play a big role in our stress levels and our money stress. And because stress triggers an automatic physical reaction, affecting our hormones and brain, this money stress impacts our health and well-being in ways you might not realize. On top of that, stress often leads to poor financial decisions, making things even more challenging.
